2-week unit on the Haitian Revolution
This is a 2-week unit that is part of a 10th-grade History course that focuses on Revolutions.
Handouts on slavery
We created this brief document on racial and legal classifications in pre-revolutionary St. Domingue to help students navigate the variety of terms in different languages across various texts. We have added Jean Casimir’s language of “captives” and some of his writing about the colonial racializing project from his recent The Haitians: A Decolonial History. These terms are further contextualized through the texts themselves and in-class discussion.
This excerpt of the excellent crowd-sourced document—”Writing about Slavery?/ Teaching about Slavery: This Might Help” by P. Gabrielle Forman and others has been a valuable tool for language and discussion in the classroom.
